QUESTIONNAIRE:
How do you react to betrayal? How severe must a betrayal be for you to consider it such?
After it happens enough, you kind of get used to it and almost learn to anticipate it. I just deal with the fallout. Seeking revenge just isn’t something I do. It has to be pretty severe for me to consider it a betrayal, too. Like, I don’t know, getting set up as the fall guy to cover for money laundering.
What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?
Family isn’t necessarily defined by blood. Family is who you surround yourself with and who you build bonds with. You can have blood family, of course, but it isn’t the be-all, end-all. Those without it are the ones with the strongest bonds, in my experience. I would consider Hana-chan to be part of my family. There are a few others, too, but I’m not as willing to name them.
What is the most frightening thing you've ever done? What part of you did it test the most?
Started over. [ He chuckles. ] It wasn’t my choice to do it, but that’s why it was so scary. It tested my resolve the most. I spent a lot of time just surviving and trying to find a way to get back on my feet. It was probably the best and worst thing that could have happened to me.
What is your favorite diversion? Hobbies, indulgences, vices? Would you put off important things for that diversion, or would you be more strict about how you spend your time and/or money?
Diversions are easy to find in a place like Kamurocho. A few of my favorites are karaoke, visiting the hostess and cabaret clubs, and going out for a few drinks. I may have...maybe put off doing my work in favor of taking it easy on a few occasions. What can I say? Everyone likes to have fun.
POWERS & ABILITIES: He’s good at kicking.
That’s about it.
SUITABILITY: Yakuza is a series full of all of the themes of this game. Akiyama is no stranger to the world of vice and violence that comes with living and working alongside (and sometimes with) yakuza in a redlight district.
FACTION SUITABILITY:
Shuten Clan: Akiyama is a bit too relaxed for Shuten. He knows typical yakuza types and has no problem with (some of) them, he’s just not that kind of person. He can and does fight, but it’s a last resort rather than a first resort. His hard partying, hard drinking days are past him.
Tamamo Clan: Akiyama is all about chasing his bliss, but he doesn’t have the cunning and insight here. His experience in owning and running a hostess club might come in handy to Tenkohime, though. This wouldn’t be the worst fit for him, as he doesn’t really obfuscate his true nature and sees no need to.
Sutoku Alliance: This is where Akiyama would thrive. His main enterprise is a (nonprofit) loan business, helping people who have nowhere else to go. He knows well the value of information; one of his biggest resources is a whisper network of the homeless people around Kamurocho. Knowing the flow of information in a city is extremely important when you run a business like Akiyama does – you should always know where your next problem might crop up.
Department of the Enma: Akiyama is far too chaotic to fit here. He’s also seen the kind of shit that goes on to maintain corrupt power structures and he’s really not keen on being a part of that. His overall disorderly life and lackadaisical way of doing things would create far more headaches for the Enma than he surely wants to deal with.
